Prestige Dubai Contract for Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd
A British-based company has secured a multi-million pound deal to supply electrical equipment for one of the largest ever transport projects in the Middle East.
Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd – a world leader in circuit breaker technology – will supply more than 220 of its Lightning DC circuit breakers and over 400 Disconnect Switches for the Dubai light railway system, currently under construction in the United Arab Emirates.
Explained Barry Wilson, Global DC Sales Manager at Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd : “The initial contract covers phase one of the development but we hope that this will lead to further orders as the new metro system expands in the coming years.
“The Lightning DC products are being supplied to Dubai from our manufacturing plants here in the UK. Incorporating our NDC circuit breakers, they are the latest addition to our ‘fit and forget’ range of switchgear products.
“They require minimal maintenance and offer optimal safety, reliability and high speed performance for a variety of demanding applications.”
Due to be completed in 2009, the first phase of the Dubai LRT project will connect Rashidiya in the northeast of the city with Jebel Ali Port in the southwest. Just over 45km of the 52km line will be elevated with the rest underground in the centre of the city.
The total cost of the initial phase is estimated at GBP 1.7Billion. Later phases will run around both sides of Dubai Creek to serve both the old city and modern developments.
