Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd on track to replace railroad circuit breakers
Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd – a world leader in circuit breaker technology – is on track to replace essential equipment on one of the most prestigious railroads in the US.
For nearly a quarter of a century, the Metro-North Railroad has provided a daily commuter service between New York City and Connecticut, relying on a traction power system that incorporates DC circuit breakers from various manufacturers.
Over recent months Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Ltd has worked closely with Metro-North to develop a new circuit breaker that utilizes its latest NDC technology, at the same time ensuring it is fully interchangeable with existing DC switchgear.
As a result, a new NDC-DR product was fitted within Metro-North’s New Haven substation and will provide an option for other upgrade projects.

“It will also allow customers to replace old or obsolete DC circuit breakers without modification to existing switchgear and can be calibrated to individual specifications.”
Rated at 6,000 amps 750 volts, other benefits of the new NDC-DR include high-speed trip operations, a patented arc transfer coil, fully bi-direction current interruption and ergonomic, intuitive truck isolation and interlocking.
